The renowned car collection of the Detroit Historical Society features several one-of-a-kind automobiles. Pictured is a prototype of the Ford Cougar II, a red fastback two-door coupe designed by designed Eugene Bordinat and built on a Shelby Cobra chassis (CSX2008), powered by a production 289 cu-in V-8 engine, and equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission. The car has a metallic cherry-red paint with an all-black interior of black leather upholstery. The top panel is painted gray. The car is one of three included in the X-Car group by Ford, which also included the Mustang II and Allegro. This was the more racing-oriented of the three. It was said by Ford Motor Company that car had the capability of going 170 mph. The prototype proved to be aerodynamically inefficient and was not redesigned. In the racing world, its design was replaced by the Shelby Daytona. Proceeds from the Salute to the Legends Ball on May 11 will support ongoing efforts to digitize our entire collection, increasing the accessibility of our collections and ensuring that Detroit's stories will be told for generations to come. #SaluteTheLegends More information and tickets at https://detroithistorical.org/2024Legends
