On today’s #ClassicCarSunday we have the 1969 #BMW 2800 Bertone Spicup concept car The Spicup was a prototype made by Bertone and Marcello Gandini for BMW in 1969. The car was unveiled at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. The name Spicup originates from the word combination and metamorphosis of spider + coupé. The idea of the design was to closely follow the footsteps of the famous BMW 507. The Bertone concept car also had a great resemblance to the Alfa Romeo Montreal prototype which was released at the 1967 Montreal Expo. The Montreal also featured semi-hidden headlights with motorised flaps. A highlight of the design was the three-piece sliding roof made of stainless steel. The Spicup used the BMW 2500 as a backbone and Bertone shortened the chassis to fit a new body and interior. As a power plant, Bertone used the bigger inline 6 cylinders with a 4-speed manual transmission from the BMW 2800 that produced 127kW (170 hp). Inside, only the gauges and pedals remained stock. Bertone fitted a new dashboard, seats and carpet with green upholstery. Unfortunately, the car was totally out of place with BMW’s model line and was not suitable for production. BMWs sold the Spicup to an enthusiastic owner who drove the car over 100 000 km (60 000 miles) traveling frequently from the Netherlands to Germany. This was possible due to the BMW 2500 chassis and the 2800 drivetrain. The car was restored and brought back to its original condition. The Spicup was shown at the 2009 Villa d’Este Concours.
